Interactive Podcasting and the Future of Internet Television

“Interactive Podcasting” is a term that is yet be uttered by the
podcast masses. However, in its infant stages it poses a direct
threat to the special features market of DVD’s, and as it grows,
it will certainly revolutionize the way we view television
forever.
What is “Interactive Podcasting” you may be asking.
In an article I wrote a few months back I made this statement,
“Podcasting in my opinion is the genesis of Video Internet
Technology. That is, the merging of what we know as the
“internet” and current broadcast, cable or satellite
programming. It has long been discussed that the internet and
television would one day be one in the same. But there has not
been much talk into how this transition, into a new future of
“Informative Entertainment” or “Intelligent Programming” will
develop.
Video podcasting has opened the floodgates for internet
television to directly compete with traditional broadcast
television. Over the next few years, companies like Microsoft
and others who have already introduced home T.V. set-top boxes,
which will stream internet feeds directly to televisions in your
home. This is the birth of home internet television in its
purest form.
Everyone owns a DVD or two, right? If not, you have at least
watched one, I hope. Now, when you put a DVD into the machine
and turn it on, it takes you to a menu screen. This menu screen
gives you options to choose from, such as scenes, extras,
director’s cut and so on. These extras are huge draws for DVD
sales, like Shrek, Star Wars, etc. The reason they are a big
success, is because they put the power of choice in the hand of
the user. Whatever your choice may be, the DVD will follow, and
execute.
So what if podcasting had the ability to implement “user
options”? What if you were watching a Video Podcast, and have
the ability to choose different features of that podcast by
simply placing your cursor over the screen and choosing your
option. What if you had the ability to alter and control video,
with the same user applicability that you can on a webpage or
search engine.
Podcasting has just ventured into the video phase, where
everyone from amateur producers to billion dollar media
companies are scrambling to figure out how to make this medium
useful, and of course, profitable. So as the medium evolves, the
user will demand more from the industry, and a response will be
absolutely necessary, in order to make digital media as viable
and powerful as a DVD and VHS tapes once were.
The response society will need, is to make digital content as
interactive as a physical product would be and then some.
Because what good is the new “Pirates of The Carribean Movie”
being delivered to your home set-top media device, if you can’t
choose to watch how they produced the new spectacular
sword-fighting scene you heard about?
Right now podcasting is the first step in the direction of
internet television, it has opened the door for subscription
based technology to thrive on the internet. And that is the
birth of internet cable television in its purest form. So as the
podcast masses start to grow into the hundreds of thousands and
millions of viewers per podcast show, the industry will start to
add user options to its shows, and these options will be
interactive in their nature.
For example, let’s say you are watching a popular video podcast
like What I Want Fitness (http://www.WhatIWantFitness.com). This
show features personal training advice from an instructor, and
during the session you are watching, you see a particular
exercise that you really liked, and would like to see more
variations of. So what if you could take your mouse and click on
the trainer’s bicep, and as you did that, the screen would open
a list of bicep exercise shows that are available, as well as
text on the bicep muscle structure. You could then instantly
transition to a new bicep exercise, or maybe click on the text
to learn a little more about the muscle you are training.
Now this is a very simple example, but very true to the power of
interactive podcasting, and eventually interactive iTV. Podcast
shows that start implementing these features will attract a huge
viewer response ratio, where a show will then be able to alter
its programming in direct relation to the data and feedback it
is receiving from its viewers. This will only make programming
better in the future. If 75% of the viewers are choosing to look
at resistance related exercises, then the show will be able to
get that data from web statistical information, and implement
the changes to serve their audience better on the next show.
As this power is implemented by the major media conglomerates of
the world, internet television will take off, and the merge of
the television and the internet, will have occurred.
You see, until practical applicability of interactive
programming is made prominent, internet television will not see
its true potential. But once it does catch on, Interactive
Podcasting will be seen as the birth of this revolution in media
delivery.
Now, if we could just get the browsers to keep up and give us
the support we need in the xhtml level.

10 Tips to Shoot Better Pictures with your Digital Camera

WIth the boom of the digital photography more pictures then ever
are being shot everyday. The Digital Photography allows to
increase significantly the picture production by lowering costs.
But does the quality increase on the same ratio ? Probably not.
WIth few simple tips it is possible to take more advantage of
your own equipment and increase the value of your own pictures.
1) Get closer to the Subject: 90% of the pictures are taking too
far of the subject. Just step towards your subject and ensure
that it fills completely your visor. It is never too close.
2) Use a tripod: take a light high quality tripod with you and
use it! You will be able to capture more details of your subject
and increase the sharpness, specially when taking scenics,
arquitecture and landscapes.
3) Use the “Raw” mode of your digital camera: JPG pictures
allows only 8 bit per channel, this means the information per
channel is restricted and you may loose information when
processing your picture later in your digital lab. RAW modes
support the full range of your digital equipment and provides
highly flexibility to re- process your pictures afterwards.
4) Use low ISO values: your digital camera is able to be setup
to high ISO Values (ISO 500-1500), however the noise of the
sensor will increase dramatically, needing also an intensive
post-processing, i.e. using noise reduction filters. Use higher
ISO values only when its unavoidable
5) Keep it simple: in photography less is more. Concentrate on
the message you desire to capture and try to eliminate
everything else. Keep your backgrounds simple and your main
subject understandable without anything else that could disturbe
your clear message.
6) Bring profundity in your pictures. The world has three
dimensions, but your pictures only two. A subject that looks
great to your eyes may appear flat in your pictures. Play with
diagonal elements crossing the picture, but with simplicity of
lines.
7) Either Fore or Background: a typical beginner error is to try
to capture fore and background on the same picture. This is the
typical “tourist” picture in front of some touristic attraction.
Decide if you would like to capture the fore- or the background
and concentrate on one subject. Only by using extreme wide-angle
lens and a good composition you can have both.
Discover hidden details: The world is infinite complex and
contains innumerable details that are waiting to be captured by
your lenses. Use tele-photo lenses to bring to the audience what
only you have discovered.
9) Don´t place your subject in the middle. Your pictures will be
boring if everything is symetric and the subject is exact in the
middle. Apply the “golden section” of the “rule of the thirds”.
Keep your composition balanced. Of course, extreme symmetry can
be wonderful, if applied properly.
10) Unleash your creativity: once you have carefully applied the
rules 1-9, forget them and start using creative photography.
Don´t use tripod and move your camera intentionally in order to
get blure pictures, play with high ISO values and extreme
perspectives, extreme light situations and unusual subjects. You
will be a great photographer.

This is the introduction to my new book, which will be for sale
next year: With this book I have endeavoured to explain the
major factors of the sound reproduction of a loudspeaker. It
hope it will be a helpful summary for the loudspeaker enthusiast
as well as the professional who wants an overview of the latest
technology and knowledge. It also provides the enthusiast with a
broad knowledge and basic understanding of loudspeaker design in
order to enable him or her to understand the manufacturers data
and advertising and therefore also supply a guide for the
purchase of loudspeakers, be it finished products or kitsets.
Unfortunately a lot of advertising is unclear, confusing and
missleading. I wish this book will shed some light in the
mystyrious ways of sound reproduction, which are very often not
as mysterious as some people would like us to believe. I
therefore also describe a generic loudspeaker with excellent
sound reproduction and moderate cost. Due to the ever changing
market I don’t name specific models but rather show with the
following example in this book that an excellent sounding
speaker does not need to be overly complicated or extravagant. A
carefull selection of good parts and well engineered crossover
is mostly sufficient. Unfortunatly the latter is a bit difficult
to achieve without some basic measuring equipment and
experience. However for the commited DIY the costs for equipment
is relatively affordable nowaddays and experience is mostly
gained with time. I ommited elaborate mathematics, since the
enthusiast is usally interested in the practical aspects and the
professional knows the basic mathematics already. Therefore my
emphasis lies on cone technology and driver design, which is
normally, providing the cabinet is sensfully designed, the most
critical part which determines the soundquality. Several
transducer principles will be explained, but again the emphasis
lies on the electrodynamik transducer for reasons of
practicality, sensitivity, size and last not least price. Due to
these advantages it does not surprise that most commercial
loudspeakers use standard electrodynamik transducers to
reproduce sound instead of exotic technology which is usually
costly and their advantages in sound reproduction are often
questionable to say the least. Of course this does not mean the
electrodynamik transducer is always superior, but in order to
achieve a significant advantage over a well designed and
constructed electrodynamik loudspeaker a manufacturer has to go
to great length and in the case of an exotic transducer design,
spend extensive time in the development which again is costly.
All the new introductions of transducer technology that I have
heard of are based on theories and designs invented many decades
ago and allthough improved and modified, are not really “new
technology”. It seems all the transducer inventions have been
made and we can only improve on those. Maybe new scientific
research and developments will enable us one day to build the
perfect loudspeaker, preferably with very small size, but until
then we will have to compromise and live with an “almost perfect
sound”. Since sound reproduction is to a great extend also a
matter of perception, there is a big element of subjectivity and
personal taste involved. This element of taste often leads to
massive discussions and arguments about which loudspeaker sounds
best. We have all sorts of sophisticated measuring equipment at
our disposal, with which we can measure all sorts of things, but
the relation between measurements and perception is not well
researched and is not conclusive at the present day. A big
problem up to date is the measuring signal that is used, which
should be representative of a musical signal but still be simple
enough to conduct exact measurements. Especially in the area of
distortion measurements there are no clear methods in place that
allow an assessment which emcompasses all important audible
aspects.

The Best Projection Screen

There is a wide variety of screens each one with a choice of
projection surfaces. Selecting the right combination to meet
your needs is important for optimum results.
The following is a guideline for selecting a screen that suits
your application. Although these recommendations will work in
most situations, each must be looked at not as a strict rule,
but rather as a guideline for determine your actual needs based
on your own situation.
Pick the type screen that best suits your particular needs. For
example, choose form front projection or rear projection screens in either
potable, wall or ceiling mounted models in either manual or
electric versions. Generally, if your projection application is
permanent, then wall and ceiling screens are your best choice.
If, however, you find your needs require moving the screen to
different locations then a portable screen is a better
alternative.
Determine the optimum screen size based on room dimensions,
planned audience seating size and arrangement. The rule of thumb
is to fit the screen to the audience-not to the projector.
I recommend the following formula for determining screen size:
· Screen height should be approximately equal to 1/6 the
distance from the screen to the last row of seats, allowing text
to be read and detail to be seen in the projected image.
· Ideally, the first row of seats should be approximately 2
screen heights away.
· The bottom of the screen should be a minimum of 4 feet above
the audience floor, allowing those seated toward the rear of the
audience to see the screen. This may require additional screen
“drop” for ceiling hung screens.
· Select the appropriate format for your projection
application. Common formats are as follows
