Mountain Bike Holidays - No Ordinary Vacation

Mountain bikers don’t just like ordinary vacations – they want to take mountain bike holidays, where they can get out and try out trails that they don’t often get the opportunity to try out. They also enjoy mountain bike holidays because they get to experience cultures, challenges, and scenery that simply isn’t common place to their lives. It’s no wonder that touring companies have started offering mountain bike holidays in almost every imaginable destination in the world!
Even bike manufacturers are getting in on the action. Trek has Trek Travel, which specializes in – you guessed it – mountain bike vacations and tours. Fisher Bikes has also started offering tour packages – with Gary Fisher as your friendly guide! Other manufacturers are sure to follow in the very near future – because there is a definite market for mountain bike holidays!
Travel agents are another good source for finding mountain bike vacation packages, but they usually don’t offer what touring companies – which are not the same as travel agencies – can offer. Touring companies typically offer guided tours, but many offer self-guided tours as well. Depending on where you want to go, and what your level of experience is, a self-guided tour may be more enjoyable than a guided tour. However, if you are inexperienced, or if you are going to a foreign country, you should strongly consider a guided tour.
The tour guides are usually well trained, and they know the places that they will be leading you like the back of their hands. You won’t have to worry about getting lost or not finding the most challenging trails for your skill level – the guide has all of that information. These guides typically know what is acceptable, and what is unacceptable, in the areas that they often ride in, in terms of dealing with the locals – especially in foreign countries. These guides are also well equipped to deal with emergencies – whether it is a bike breakdown or an injury.
Self guided tours, on the other hand, are exactly what they sound like – self guided. The touring company makes all of the arrangements for you to get to the destination where you will ride – but no guide accompanies you. You are not guided on the trails in most cases either. This means that you need to have the necessary experience to deal with any situations that may arise, such as injuries or breakdowns, and you need to be able to read a map well. You may also need to do some investigating to determine where you may and may not ride – especially in a foreign country! Beginner mountain bikers typically do not have the necessary experience, and need to stick to guided tours for the time being.
If you have never been on a tour of any type, it is a good idea to know what you are getting into before booking the tour. Some tours consist of only you, your guide, and other members of your party – such as your friends or family members. Other tours consist of you, the guide, and other people who have signed up for the tour – strangers. It is important to know what the arrangement is before booking the tour.
You also need to know what is expected of you on the tour. Most tours provide the bikes, and they are usually top of the line bikes. Some companies will allow you to bring your own bike, but in most cases, you will be responsible for your own bike. Your food may or may not be provided as part of the package. Again, it is vital that you find out all this information before booking the tour.
For your next vacation, you should definitely contact some of the touring companies about mountain bike holidays to see if there is a trip that interests you. Vacations are about more than just sightseeing – adventure is the key to a fabulous vacation that you will never forget!

British & European Holiday Homes In Great Demand 2006

British and European Holiday Homes are already experiencing a buoyant demand for 2006, and there are several very good reasons for this.
The first unquestionably is the Football (Soccer) World Cup that takes place in Germany from June 9th to July 9th. This is the largest worldwide sporting event outside of the Olympic Games and with Germany being so central for so many of the competing teams, supporters in their millions are already planning the month long trip to Germany. And of course they will all need a bed for the night, German police don’t take too kindly to drunks sleeping on park benches. It all adds up to an explosive demand for properties in Germany for the coming summer, and that demand is spilling over into neighbouring countries too.
In Britain the Open Golf Championship returns to Hoylake on Merseyside for the first time in nearly forty years. Liverpool and Chester are only 15 miles away. This is a huge event these days attracting massive crowds (the competition runs from July 20th to the 23rd) and this seaside venue is much more accessible than some of the more remoter Scottish courses that often host this festival of golf. Demand for houses in or near Hoylake, and near can mean anything up to 40 miles away, for this particular week has been phenomenal for the past two years. Some residents are planning to move out and after collecting the equivalent of a year’s rental, for just the one week, many have booked fine holidays in Florida and Australia. All this paid for with change left over on the back of the potential visit of Tiger Woods and company. Can he win the Grandslam? He will need to win at Hoylake to do so.
Add in to the mix the traditional attractions such as Wimbledon Fortnight, The Cheltenham National Hunt Horseracing festival, and the rejuvenated English Cricket team, and it all points towards the busiest summer for many years. If you are planning a trip to Britain or Europe through the summer of 2006 make sure you book up your accommodation sooner rather than later. Latecomers could be staring at rapidly escalating accommodation rates, if they can find anything at all!
Of course all this optimism could be dented by terrorist outrages, but thankfully most travellers seem to be made of sterner stuff. It is almost as if every incident spurs on many visitors towards an almost Churchillian attitude. “We will not be cowed or put off by cowards!” And may that long be the case. The message seems to be, find a property, secure it by paying the rental in full, and don’t accept any cancellation notice unless a generous compensation package is offered. It all looks like being a fun summer. If you are planning a trip, happy travelling!

Dental Careers Outlook Something to Smile About

Americans’ obsession with their pearly whites has created a tremendous demand for professionally trained dental assistants and dental hygienists.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) predicts that the dental assistant profession is expected to grow about 42 percent by 2012. This is good news for the thousands of dentists who rely on certified dental assistants or dental hygienists to help with patient care.
Dental assistants, who train in various dental assisting programs across the nation, are usually the first and last people patients see at the dentist’s office. They assist with routine cleanings and dental x-rays, prepare equipment, and perform other tasks requested by the dentist.
“We have come a long way from just scheduling appointments and putting on a patient bib,” said Mary Frohn, CDA, CDPMA, EFDA, B.S., a professor in the Massasoit Community College Dental Assistant Program. After eleven years working in a clinical setting, Frohn now trains the next generation of dental auxiliary students to enter the field.
“I get great satisfaction from taking students from not knowing anything about dental assisting on their first day of class, to help make them dental career professionals in less than a year,” Frohn said.
Growing trends – including promoting good dental hygiene, increases in cosmetic dentistry, a rising number of employers offering dental insurance and more government-subsidized dental hygiene programs – are all responsible for increasing the demand for dental services and filling seats in her dental assistant program.
Unlike with some jobs that are amiable to on-the-job training, dental assistants should be trained and credentialed to work in the dental assisting profession.
“It’s impossible to learn everything you need to know while you work on the job from eight to five,” said Frohn. “From a consumer aspect, training is necessary because we want to know the auxiliary using radiation on us to take our x-rays, or place a dental sealant, is properly credentialed.”
There are more benefits to being certified than just gaining consumer trust. According to a 2004 survey published by the Dental Assistant National Board (DANB), certified dental assistants stay in the profession for 14.4 years on average and earn more than dental assistants who lack certification.
“A dental assistant with credentials has negotiating power. The more credentials an assistant has, the greater the power in negotiating a fair and equitable salary,” said Betty Finkbeiner in the DANB survey results. Finkbeiner, CDA, RDA, M.S., is chairperson of the Dental Assisting Program at Washtenaw Community College in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Certified dental assistants – whether certified by their state board of dental registration, the Dental Assistant National Board, or some other registered dental assistant certifying body – are enjoying the increased demand for their services in a variety of emerging specialized areas. Among them is aesthetic dentistry, which includes bleaching and digital imaging services.
As technology changes the face of dentistry, dental assisting training will become a necessity. Dental assisting schools and dental hygienist programs will continue to provide training to meet the demand for those who want to become a dental assistant. And a promising career is always something to smile about.

Hawaii Whale-Watching

Hawaii whale-watching is truly a memorable experience. In this article, we will focus on whale-watching off the island of Maui. Whale-watching season starts as early as November, but the largest number of whales travel through Hawaii waters from mid-December to mid-April.
Each year during this time, approximately 1,500 to 2,000 humpback whales migrate south from their summer feeding grounds in the Arctic. Scientists estimate that this 3,000 mile swimming trip takes them from 80 to 100 days.
The whales seem to favor the calmer bays and wide bank areas between the islands of Maui, Molokai and Lanai. With their bulky heads and two blow-holes, they can often be seen cavorting in the warm waters, breaching and slapping the surface of the water. Here they mate, or bear their “calves” conceived the previous winter.
A mature humpback whale is about 45 feet in lenth and can weigh up to 80,000 pounds. Their calves weigh around 3,000 pounds at birth and feed off their mother’s high-fat milk for six to eight months, consuming 100 to 130 gallons per day.
Strangely enough, the adult whales do not eat while in Hawaii, since they are “seasonal” feeders. However, when they return to their Arctic habitat an average humpback whale will consume 4,500 to 5,000 pounds of plankton, krill (small, shrimp-like creatures), and fish per day!
On Maui, the opportunities for whale-watching from land are extensive. A good vantage point for seeing whales from land is basically anywhere you get a pretty a wide ocean view. McGregor Point, at mile marker 9, as you head from Maalaea, toward Lahaina, is a well-known whale watching place. Continuing toward Lahaina, whales can also be seen off the Olowalu Reef–between McGregor Point and the town of Olowalu.
When you head south on the Wailea coast, the Outrigger Wailea Resort provides another excellent viewing spot, with a telescope installed by the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary. South from Wailea, Puu Olai overlooking Makeena Beach is considered Maui’s best spot for whale-watching.
Whale watching requires patience. Scan the horizon for a cloud of spewing water that rises from 10 to 20 feet above the ocean’s surface. Watch for a good half-hour or so; whales need to breath every 7 to 20 minutes, and their spray is simply water vapor that they exhale from their blow hole. So once you locate that tell-tale spray of water, focus your eyes on the area for another one. Here binoculars are especially helpful.
But the best way to see humpback whales is out in their domain–and you can book a whale-watching cruise for that. Maui is the home of the Pacific Whale Foundation. A non-profit whale research organization, it supports its research by offering whale-watching tours.
In addition, almost every snorkel and dive-boat in the area becomes a whale-watching vessel in winter. Maui whale-watching tours leave Lahaina and Maalaea harbors daily during the winter months. In addition to humpbacks, sperm whales, pilot whales, pygmy killer whales, beaked whales, melon-headed whales and “false” killer whales can often be seen there. You can also view the whales on a rafting expedition. These excursions also leave daily from Lahaina harbor.
The whale may play a little game with you — he will poke his head just above the water’s surface to “scope out the scene.” That kind of behavior is actually called a “spy hop,” meaning it’s his way of showing off (if he feels so inclined). He’ll then leap completely out of the water. If he’s only in the mood to exchange nods, he’ll slap his tail or wave his side fins at you — that’s the humpback whale’s way of saying “Hi!”
Whales communicate underwater through mysterious “songs,” forming a perplexing series of sounds. Most whale-watching charters on Maui have a hydrophone on board, which will enable you to hear and enjoy the complex sounds of these majestic creatures.
Remember that humpback whales are protected by the Marine Mammals Protection Act, and you may come no closer than 100 yards. Even at that distance you will sense the power and beauty of these creatures, and you will come away with memories of a lifetime.

Beachfront Villas, Yachts; All-Inclusive Packages Make Great Caribbean Vacations

The Caribbean, also known as the West Indies, is the common term given to a group of islands located in the Caribbean Sea. Located from the southeastern areas of Mexico to the northwest of Venezuela in South America, these Islands are organized into 25 territories including sovereign states, overseas departments, and dependencies. There are at least 7,000 islands, islets, reefs, and cayes in the whole Caribbean region.
Because of their location and their natural beauty, the islands in the Caribbean region have become favorites to tourists, due to the many things they offer like style, seclusion, niche gifts, and nightlife.
Planning a trip to the Caribbean soon? Read the tips below to make the most of your vacation.
Rent or buy a beachfront villa If you have the money, the best way to totally enjoy the Caribbean is to rent or buy a Caribbean villa. The prices of Caribbean villas range from the cheap to the outrageously expensive. The prices depend in the location but almost all villas are beautiful.
In general, beachfront villas in the Bahamas area are expensive while beachfront property in the Dominican Republic is more affordable. Both locations are beautiful but the Bahamas is frequented by significantly more tourists than the Dominican Republic.
IF you are planning to stay for just a few days or a few weeks, it is highly advisable that you rent a beachfront villa instead of staying in a hotel. There are many advantages to doing it this way. It is more private and beautiful than a crowded hotel. Another advantage of a rented beachfront villa is the fact that you can cook your own meal there. In a hotel your choices are to all meals, in a restaurant. You can even hire someone to cook for you in a beachfront villa.
Rent a Caribbean Island But if you want to have a really perfect Caribbean vacation then rent a whole Caribbean Island for yourself or for you and your friends or family. That’s right! You can rent a whole Island in the Caribbean. You can truly live like a king on the island because it comes with staff and everything you need to spend a luxurious vacation. Renting a whole Caribbean island is also a very nice idea for a wedding or any party.
Charter a Yacht If the island is too much activity for your tastes, you could just charter a luxury yacht. There are many Caribbean yacht providers that will surely be able to meet your needs and budget.
Get in touch with a Caribbean holiday specialist Of course you can simply go online and start searching and learn everything there is to do in the Caribbean and the places to go when you get there. But it is definitely a lot easier to simply employ a Caribbean holiday specialist to help you plan the perfect Caribbean vacation. Getting the services of a Caribbean holiday specialist will save you a lot of time and energy. You could also save money with this method because they know different discounts and preferred rates. They have insight and knowledge and many years experience booking Caribbean vacations so you don’t have to do serious work and effort to plan the vacation yourself.

David Arnold Livingston loves to travel with his family and a favorite spot for vacation is the Caribbean. As a resource, he recommends: Ultra Kool Caribbean.

Choosing the Best Accommodations for Your Orlando Vacation

You’ve finally decided to take the family on the long
awaited trip to DisneyWorld. Now you have to decide where to
stay while you’re there. The options may seem limited, but
there really are more choices than you might think.
Important Points to Consider When Choosing Accommodations
Before you make your final decision regarding your
accommodations, there are a few factors that should be taken
into consideration. First and formost is your budget.
Obviously, the larger your budget the more options that are
available to you.
You also need to consider number of people in your party. A
family of 4 can usually fit into an average room at one of
the many Disney Resort properties or an off-site hotel quite
comfortably. However, if your party is larger than 4, or
includes several families or a large group travelling
together you will need more space and you may want to
consider an off-site vacation home or resort condo. Another
option for large families is to book 2 or more adjoining
rooms at a hotel.
What type of amenities are important to you and your family?
Is privacy and seclusion a high priority for you? Or are you
more concerned with the type of amenities available to you
during your stay? Will you have a car, either your own or a
rental? Or will you need transportation to and from the
parks? Do you plan on spending the majority of your vacation
on Disney property, or are you interested in spending some
time away from the theme parks and exploring the many other
attractions central Florida has to offer?
The answers to all of these questions will help to make your
choice of accommodations much easier.
The Pros and Cons of On-Site Accommodations
Most first time visitors to the Orlando area choose to stay
at one of the many Walt Disney World Resort Properties.
These properties have long had a reputation for being clean,
well maintained, and very family friendly. The excellent
service provided by the Disney staff is also a big plus.
Other advantages of staying on-site at one of the resort
properties is the use of the resort’s transportation system.
There is no need to rent a car if you plan on spending your
entire stay at the Disney theme parks. There is an extensive
transportation system available to guests that will take you
anywhere you want to go within the resort. However, if you
think you may want to venture off-site to some of the other
attractions, restaurants, or shows in the Orlando area then
you will need to find your own transportation.
Your vacation budget should also be carefully considered if
you are planning on staying on-site. The resort
accommodations tend to be more expensive than off-site
alternatives, and rooms are limited. It may be difficult to
find availability if you are planning your trip at the last
minute.
The Pros and Cons of Off-Site Accommodations
Many visitors to the Orlando area, especially first time
visitors, are not aware of the many off-site accommodation
options available to them. There are hotels, motels,
resorts, and privately owned condos and vacation pool homes
all within a 10 - 15 minute drive of the parks. All of these
are viable alternatives to staying within the Walt Disney
World Resort.
Choosing an off-site hotel or motel can be a good
alternative to on-site accoommodations. Many offer free
shuttles to and from the theme parks and other popular area
attractions. This can be very convenient and can also save
you from paying daily parking fees. However, shuttle times
can be limiting and may not fit your party’s schedule. On
the plus side, many guests enjoy being able to “escape” the
Disney atmosphere at the end of a long day. On the other
hand, the quality of off-site hotels and motels can vary
greatly and is often inconsistant, unlike the resort
properties with their high standards of excellence.
Another accommodation option that has been growing steadily
in popularity, especially among U.S. visitors to the Orlando
area are privately owned vacation homes. These homes can be
booked through one of the many management companies in the
Orlando area, or even through a travel agent.
A vacation home offers guests comfort, convenience, and
privacy. Often, large families or groups find it more cost
effective to rent a larger vacation home rather than book 2
or more hotels rooms. Vacation homes also offer the
opportunity to save money on dining out, as each home comes
with a fully equipped kitchen that allows guests to prepare
some, or all of their own meals during their stay. Many
guests also appreciate the privacy that a vacation home
provides.
Some vacation homes are located in resort communities and
offer guests the use of all the resort amenities such as
swimming pools, fitness centers, tennis courts, and game
rooms. If these amenities are important to you, be sure to
confirm that the home you are reserving is located in one of
these resort communities. If it is not, you will still have
the use of your own private swimming pool but will miss out
on the other amenities.
