Windows Stability

A few words about MS Windows stability. To those with home computers this may be less of an issue but for people whose livelihoods depend on their PC’s and the programs that run on them, there are some lessons to be learned. I would like to point out a few of the most important things you can do to keep your computers up and running.
To begin with, there are 3 applications you must have that provide the foundation for a stable Windows system. The first is a virus scanner. Viruses present a threat to just about any device that has software installed on it, including cell phones. Viruses can be transmitted through email, software programs, surfing the Internet, sharing information with other users through diskettes, zip disks, tapes, etc. Many of the early viruses were spread by Eastern Bloc countries and countries behind the now defunct Iron Curtain. Wouldn’t surprise me if this becomes a popular venue for terrorists.
Ever notice your Internet browser slowing down, or strange icons appearing on your desktop, or maybe your browser’s home page has changed and you can’t change it back. These are all indications that you have been the victim of spyware/adware. These are insidious little programs that get installed on your system by hackers and advertising companies through emails, software and music downloads, Instant Messaging and Internet browsing. This is such a big problem that Dell reports that nearly 20% of their tech. support calls involves Spyware/adware.
The third application and your first line of defense is a firewall which can consist of hardware, software or both that sits between your computer and the “outside” world, whether it’s the Internet, Intranet or a network. There is another thing you can do that is even overlooked by many computer “specialists”. DO NOT load an application or program on your Windows system unless you absolutely need it. The more applications you load on your system the more you destabilize Windows. Even if you install a program and then immediately uninstall it, there are still remnants of it that linger on your system and can act like a time bomb. I am a firm believer in the KISS (Keep it simple, stupid) method when it comes to Windows. And this includes those “helpful” desktop utility programs that purport to add, “much needed capability” to your system.
Another thing you can do for your Windows is to periodically update your systems. Microsoft provides updates on their website not only for Windows, but also for their applications as well. You can setup your system to automatically perform updates but this is a double-edged sword. I’ve seen cases where someone sits down in front of their computer in the morning and found their system totally corrupt after having been automatically updated while they slept. Some would argue that this may have been caused by a system that was already marginal to begin with, but I prefer to perform the updates manually. But however you do it, this is a very important process that should not be neglected.
The last point I would like to make concerning Windows stability addresses the hardware that your Windows is installed on. I am a firm believer in keeping your PC on ALL the time. Assuming it is protected from electrical anomalies with surge protectors and Uninterruptible Power Supplies and also assuming that you have the requisite security systems in place, you will find that your hardware lasts longer, including your hard drive if you keep your system on. Some will argue that newer technologies suggest that you should turn them off at night but my experience has proven otherwise. A classic example is a light bulb…it is much more likely to fail when you turn it on rather then when it is being used. This has to do with the initial surge of current your light bulb (system) encounters when power is first applied.

CORBA Made Simple

The most important part of knowing CORBA is, you should know the full form of CORBA, that is Common Object Request Broker Architecture. You dont even have to necessarily understand this full form, if you are only planning to see where it fits in a software solution.
To understand CORBA, let us start with our simple program. Remember the functions which we would have used in our first C program. One such function that every one is familiar is part of the famous “Hello World” Program. The function we used was the ‘printf’ function which takes in a “Hello World” as parameter and does some task of outputting it on to a console.

The signature of this function as defined in one of the headers would be

Now assume that we want to output this “Hello World” onto another machines console instead of your own machine. Let us see one way to do this.
We could use some sort of mechanisms like RPC(Remote Procedure Call). That is we make this function/procedure a remote procedure, that can be invoked remotely. We will prefix it with RPC and call this function
void RPC_printf(char* p_strOutputFromRemoteMachine);
Now basically we have defined this function and will henceforth call this as an interface. Once we have defined this interface, we need to implement this interface so that it prints onto the console what ever is passed on to the ‘p_strOutputFromRemoteMachine’ parameter. We can as well assume that the implementation of this ‘RPC_printf’ functions is the same as the one used by the normal printf function. Now one question that would come up in mind is. We have jsut copied the same implementation of the function ‘printf’ and renamed it by giving a prefix ‘RPC_’. How will this work remotely? Once we answer this question, we can as well understand what is RPC, and can then go ahead to understand what is CORBA in its basic structure.
First and foremost, the C function printf cannot be accessed across the process or across the machine boundary. Both of the caller, that is our Hello World program and the implementation of the printf function has to be on the same machine and within the same process. But our interface RPC_printf can be accessed across processes and machine boundaries. How do we do that? Once we have created the interface RPC_printf. we now generate some helper methods that will help us put this to the outside world. We could use some tool to generate what is known as the stub/skeleton in CORBA terminology. The stub is what is used on the client side. On the client side, the client will make a call RPC_printf and to the user of this method on the client, it will just be that he has made a call similiar to the printf statement. But since it is a stub onto which the call is made, the stub will take care of passing the information to the relevant skeleton on the other process which can possibly lie on the other machine. The task of identifying and sending it to the remote server machine is done by the stub on the client side.
Now the information has gone to the server side or the server skeleton. It is the reponsbility of the server skeleton to do the task that is required of the function RPC_printf and return back. The skeleton of the server side now delegates it to our implementation of RPC_printf, which can be just the copy of the implementation of the normal printf fucntion. Once this function is completed, the skeleton on the server side will pass information back to the client stub to indicate that he has completed the task sucessfully.
If we have understood the above scenario, then we have already understood RPC. But RPC has some limitations. Let us examine them. Most of the RPC will always work only on the same platforms and with the same set of language interfaces. The C style RPC on solaris will not necessarily work with the C style RPC on windows. Moreover, it could also be tied to a specific language and also a specific network protocols. We cannot call this C style interface from Java(It will give us compiler errors in the first step itself). CORBA indeed solves these 3 problems of platform, operating and network dependencies for a RPC mechanism.
Let us examine how the problems are solved by CORBA. To solve language independence, the interface RPC_printf now renamed as ‘CORBA_printf’ will use its own proprietary language which is defined by the IDL constructs. Using IDL constructs we can construct a CORBA IDL interface. The CORBA IDL constructs defines a type called string. This type can be mapped to char* of a C function or string class of a Java function. And lo, we have solved the problem of language dependency. Now who does this mapping from IDL to a specific language? This is done by the IDL compiler. For each of the language where we want to use CORBA, we will have to use the IDL compiler to generate equivalent interfaces for our language. Now the language problem is solved. What about the platform and network dependency? CORBA solves this, by using specific protocols which have to be implemented by some body called an ORB vendor. CORBA defines something called, as an IIOP which works on TCP/IP. Since this is available with all the Opearting System, we have in effect solved the Operating System and Network dependency. With this CORBA has solved all our problems of language/platform/network dependency. Now what we typically come across as ORB is nothing, but a service or program which does all this stuff for us.
Two other RPC mechanisms, that should be mentioned is COM/DCOM and RMI. As we saw earlier, there are some limitations. COM/DCOM is popular among the windows programmers. But the main problem with this is, this cannot be used with Unix like machines. With Java as a platform independent solution, we can solve this problem of being dependent on Operating System platform by using RMI(Remote Method Invocation). But it fails to solve the problem related to different language. All RMI calls have to be made and written in Java only. This may not be a problem for fresh developement. But if we have legacy systems, we cannot overwrite everything from scratch and move all our huge code base, say for example from ‘C’ language to ‘Java’ language. The following table shows this.

i.e Our ‘CORBA_printf’ can now be written in C language and implemented on solaris Operating System and then we can have this method being called by a Java client from a windows Operating System.

The http:// communications on port 80 which is the default port for all Internet traffic. However, there are specialty sites and pages that need to work more securely such as https:// which communicates on port 443. For whatever reason, the Norton software becomes corrupt and then blocks traffic on port 443. You usually will receive “Page Not Found” error when the port is blocked.
You may also run into this problem when you are using a computer at different locations. Say for instance, you can reach a particular site while surfing at home; however, when you try to reach that same site from a location at work, you get the “Page Not Found” error. The reason for this problem is usually because corporate security has blocked the particular port you are trying to access. All web pages cannot be reached on port 80 even if they are not secure (https://) sites.

Microsoft CRM Integration with Great Plains - Overview For Consultant

Initially this integration was created for Microsoft Great Plains 7.5 (now Microsoft Dynamics GP), later on Microsoft released the patch, which enables integration between GP 8.0 and MS CRM 1.2 (now Microsoft Dynamics CRM). Integration is created on the BizTalk platform and requires dedicated computer: Windows2003 server with MS SQL instance. You access settings forms via web interface. We will briefly review integration capability and give you some technical insights, based on our experience.
• Customers/Accounts. When you create account in MS CRM – integration automatically creates account in Great Plains Dynamics GP. It is a bit challenging to make all the features and settings work, especially if you plan to use default class, address, etc. At the same time it works as it should if you provide parameters, such as credit amount value in MS CRM – then this number goes seamlessly into GP. Somewhat non-elegant – it is difficult to design automatic increasing numbering for Great Plains customer record. Out of the box – integration generates CUSTNMBR from Account name in CRM – this means that you should take off CUSTNMBR from all the printed forms in Great Plains.
• SOP Sales Order. When you release sales order in CRM – it goes to Great Plains. The most common question is – why Order doesn’t integrate if Customer doesn’t have credit limit setup in Great Plains. You should find procedural way to deal with this problem.
• Historical customers. This is another common problem. When you launch/implement MS CRM – you import your existing customers from Great Plains into CRM. Then you typically want to move sales quote and order generation process to MS CRM, where you have nice mailmerge mechanism to print quote for customer in the form of Microsoft Word contract or quote template. When you import customers via MS CRM import tool – they will be automatically duplicated by MS CRM GP Integration. You need to delete new customer records in Great Plains and then update Integration records in MS GP CRM Integration database. We provide script below (please use this script only if you first analyzed it and if you are very comfortable with SQL scripting for MS GP and MS CRM, GREATPLAINSSERVER is linked server – you create it from GPCRM integration server side):

Misrosoft Word Is Great But I Wish I Could

Microsoft Word is all singing, all dancing. Truly a great product which has made the lives of professional writers and students vastly more productive.
Most of us however are not professional writers. We only use Word to type an occasional missive or and article now and then. We don’t need or use 90% of the bells and whistles. Unfortunately, some of these built in bells and whistles are designed to impose themselves and often like to blow loudly in our ears whether we asked for it or not.
Research shows there are three common pet hate ‘features’ that most average users would rather turn off if only they knew how. This is a cheat sheet for such users.
A. How do I stop Word from helping me type?
Word checks spelling and grammar as you type. When these features are on, spelling and grammar that Word does not recognize are underlined sternly with wavy red and green lines.
To turn off Word’s various automatic checking features:
1. From the Tools menu, pick ‘AutoCorrect’ (or AutoCorrect Options). Then click on the ‘AutoCorrect’ tab.
2. Uncheck the boxes for the AutoCorrect items that you want to disable.
3. Do the same on the ‘AutoFormat As You Type’ tab.
4. On the ‘AutoText’ tab, uncheck the ‘Show AutoComplete tip’ box.
5. From the Tools menu, pick ‘Options’ then click on the tabs and uncheck any boxes for features that you want to disable.
B. How do I tell the Office Assistant to go take a walk?
1. Click on the Office Assistant, then click on ‘Options’.
2. Uncheck the ‘Use Office Assistant’ box.
You can also customize the behavior of the Office Assistant by checking or clearing the checkboxes on the ‘Options’ tab.
If you later decide that you rather miss the lovable Assistant, you can easily bring him back by choosing ‘Show the Office Assistant’ from the Help menu.
C. How do I turn off the automatic URLs?
Word likes to convert all URLs and email addresses in your document into active hyperlinks. If you’d rather not, then here’s how to turn off that feature:
1. From the Tools menu, Choose ‘AutoCorrect’ (or AutoCorrect Options).
2. Click on ‘AutoFormat As You Type’ tab.
3. Under ‘Replace As You Type’, uncheck the ‘Internet and network paths with hyperlink’ box.
Note that this setting only applies to what you subsequently type. If you forgot to turn off AutoCorrect before you started and you end up with a document full of hyperlinks that you don’t want, you can disable them, either one at a time, or all at once. To turn a link off, right-click on the link, select ‘Hyperlink’ from the pop-up menu, and then select ‘Remove Hyperlink’. To remove all links from the document, choose Select All from the Edit menu or press [Ctrl]+[A], and then press [Ctrl]+[6] to remove all hyperlinks.
Most Word features can be turned off or on from the ‘Tools’ menu. From this menu, the ‘Options’ command brings up a screen with several tabs where you can make all sorts of changes to Word’s behavior. The ‘Customize’ command lets you to change Word’s menus and toolbars.
The ‘View’ menu also has some great options for changing the look of the Word screen.
