Protecting Yourself From Spyware

If you practice diligence and follow some basic rules then you will have a much better chance of preventing the ability of a malware application from infecting your computer. Most computer spyware today is installed without your knowledge when you visit a website or download an application that will place the application on your hard drive. So one way to prevent the installation by not visiting unscrupulous web sites when you surf the web.
There has been a strong increase in the number of computer malware / spyware out on the net the past few years. Many experts in the field expect the number of infections to only increase as time goes along. Spyware are actually programs that are installed on your computer but you usually do not know of the installation and many times you did not even approve the installation. These programs can cause all types of problems for your computing experience, which range from annoying popups to someone actually stealing your personal data and impersonating your identity. You may also experience a reduction in performance of your system, since many times these programs will consume a lot of computing power as the program performs its tasks. Even though the number of computer spyware infections are increasing exponentially does not mean all is lost and you should just throw your hands up and turn off your computer forever.
Since most spyware is installed because of security holes in your browser always ensure you have the latest version of updates for your Operating System and Browser. You can also switch your Web Browser to something like FireFox which is targeted less than the more popular Browsers.
Also ensure you have a spyware protection and remover application installed. This is one of the most important items you can do to protect yourself from these infections and help to minimize the chance that you will be come infected with these types of applications

Spyware - Know Your Enemy

Spyware is a term that has become quite common to hear.
The term spyware refers to a broad category of malicious software designed to intercept or take partial control of a computer’s operation without the “known” consent of that machine’s owner or user. Spyware is as a term is being used quite loosely and includes a number of different programs. The thing they all have in common as spyware, is that they monitor the computer and/or user and share information with a third party. With or without the consent of the computer’s owner.
Semi spyware has become widely used and they manifest themselves as software, plugins or help files to other programs you want or need, and if you accept their policies and term of usage, you also accept the fact that these semi spyware programs will be installed and used.
They are normally not directly malicious as the secret spyware, but they do send out information from your computer to a third party. Most commonly some kind of habit tracing or statistics of surfing or similar. In most cases the information is completely anonymous and do not pose any kind of threat to you as an individual.
Spyware – a virus or not?
Spyware differs from viruses and worms in that it does not usually self-replicate. Like many recent viruses, however, spyware – by design – exploits infected computers for commercial gain.
Typical tactics furthering this goal include delivery of unsolicited pop-up advertisements; theft of personal information (including financial information such as credit card numbers); monitoring of Web-browsing activity for marketing purposes; or routing of HTTP requests to advertising sites.
These things are very hard to keep track of and know if a spyware is alive in your computer or if pop ups and other changes in your surfing programs behaviour should occur.
The only reliable way to know if an evil spyware is living and thriving inside your computer, is to install and use a good spyware removal program.
How does spyware infect?
Spyware does not spread like a computer virus or worm. Instead, spyware installs on your computer through deception or exploitation of software vulnerabilities.
Spyware Trojan horse!
A Trojan horse, by definition, smuggles in something dangerous in the guise of something desirable. So spyware often hide as an add on to some other program you really want.
Bundled Spyware
Spyware can also come bundled with shareware or other downloadable software, as well as music CDs. The user downloads a program (for instance, a music program or a file-trading utility) and installs it, and the installer additionally installs the spyware. Although the desirable software itself may do no harm, the bundled spyware does.
Manipulating Security Features
Another way of distributing spyware involves tricking users by manipulating security features designed to prevent unwanted installations. Internet browsers like Internet Explorer for example are easy targets t this method. Everybody has them and use them online almost daily. The way you protect yourself against this, is to always keep your operating system up to date when it comes to security updates.
Use Microsoft Update regularly (and often).
Examples of Spyware
As with computer viruses, researchers give names to spyware programs which frequently do not relate to any names that the spyware-writers use. Researchers may group programs into “families” based not on shared program code, but on common behaviours, or by “following the money” or apparent financial or business connections.
For instance, a number of the spyware programs distributed by Claria are collectively known as “Gator”. Likewise, programs which are frequently installed together may be described as parts of the same spyware package, even if they function separately.
It is also important to know that different anti spyware program creators and big antivirus software creators may have different names for the save spyware. This can cause you to believe that you have 2 or more spyware products installed when you actually only have one, but mentioned with different names.
* CoolWebSearch, a group of programs, installs through the exploitation of Internet Explorer vulnerabilities. The programs direct traffic to advertisements on Web sites including coolwebsearch. To make this happen, they display pop-up ads, rewrite search engine results, and alter the infected computer’s hosts file to direct DNS lookups to these sites.
* Internet Optimizer, also known as DyFuCa, redirects Internet Explorer error pages to advertising. When users follow a broken link or enter an erroneous URL, they see a page of advertisements. However, because password-protected Web sites (HTTP Basic authentication) use the same mechanism as HTTP errors, Internet Optimizer makes it impossible for the user to access password-protected sites.
* 180 Solutions transmits extensive information to advertisers about the Web sites which users visit. It also alters HTTP requests for affiliate advertisements linked from a Web site, so that the advertisements make unearned profit for the 180 Solutions company. It opens pop-up ads that cover over the Web sites of competing companies.
Toolbars from any other then the big players like Google, Yahoo, Msn and similar very often contains spyware to some degree today.
And even the big guns have started to incorporate “spyware like” statistics gather from their toolbars. They do tell you about them, and ask for your permission to install or active these routines. But they often do it in such a convoluted way, no one actually understand it.
So start out the day by cleaning your computer and then working. Make sure you have a restful safe day, download, scan and clean your computer from any spyware today …

AI Programming for Decision Matrix Evaluation Theory; Case Study

When programming artificial intelligent systems to make decisions and or evaluate there are a number of theories that should be explored before choosing a specific path. Writing code is tedious and time consuming indeed and it is appropriate to do as much up front work as possible. First and foremost you need to decide on which model your AI system will take in its decision making process. If you intend to build a decision matrix system then you may wish to do a little philosophical discussion with yourself or your team. For instance think of ways in which mankind normally chooses things?
For instance in a beauty contest each woman would be given a numerical value on each event. Then after three to five events the woman with the highest score wins? In the Winter Olympics in 2006 each judge might have their own method of figuring things out and perhaps give consideration either objectively or subjectively to things such as technical work, creativity, uniqueness, performance and difficulty and come up with a score and thus use that to judge. All we see is a little card which says 9.8, 9.9 or a perfect “10” you see?
Now then on these two evaluation processes you can see how you might design your program to do these things. In the event of Winter Olympics Ice Skating with many judges you might mimic this in your artificial intelligence program by simply running several slightly different programs of numerical evaluations (each one similar to a judge) and then average the scores for a total score. This might work good for choosing one product, person or concept over another. On the beauty contest you might have many judges with similar ways of grading and slightly different subjectivity over various things within each event. This too can be duplication with programming for an artificial system quite easily.
Another humanly way we do things is to have contests where we pit two different teams against each other and the winner advances and the loser does not. Kind of like basketball playoffs or soccer champion ships. Or the NFL to determine at the end of the year who is the best. This form of evaluation can easily be programmed and such code is readily available. Using techniques of double or triple elimination you can better evaluate and remove much of the randomness of chance or luck and improve probability for coming up with not necessarily the absolute answer, but statistically speaking the best probable answer down to a point in which you can feel good that your AI computer system is fair, honest and in the end has chosen the best possible answer.
Now then when evaluating evaluation decision matrix artificial intelligent systems one must also realize that you are only limited by your creativity to pick the best system to evaluate. You might even write separate systems which uses all three of these systems or more and then average them together, thus getting closer to the unattainable best possible perfect choice. Why is this important? Well, if you expect humans to follow the orders of artificial intelligence systems then you should make sure than their answers that they come up with are truly 99.999999999% the best possible answer. Think on this in 2006.

Crystal Reports: Making Data Crystal Clear

One of the most commonly used report-writing programs around the world; Crystal Reports have been in use for more than 10 years, though many did not realize they were using it. Not specified by name and commonly grouped with other programs, this innovative reporting tool has only recently begun to garner the attention it deserves. Taking dull, flat reports and turning them into exciting visual displays, Crystal Reports are a must-have for any contentious business.
The job of Crystal Reports is to take basic data and change it into a report which is not only easily-understood, but pleasing to the eye. By allowing the user to call upon almost all types of charts, maps and graphs, this program grants a new level of freedom to report generators. Also capable of entering texts, tiles, columns and diagrams, users are able to generate personalized charts and maps, as well as allowing them to save their reports and enter new data fields, at a later date, saving a great deal of time and work. Crystal Reports opens the business to a wide variety of options, allowing information to be sent to all networking computers, to be placed on the Web, or making printer-friendly versions that can be used in presentations.
At first glance, Crystal Reports may seem very intimidating to the new user, especially when one encounters Crystal Reports boot camps and high-priced schooling that is advertised on the Web. Fortunately, a large portion of this program relies upon drag and drop technology, simplifying what others would have you believe to be very complex. Additionally, many publications offer step-by-steps and how-to guides on using this popular program. With patience and a willingness to explore, Crystal Reports are easy to use and provide high-quality work with very little expertise.

Microsoft Dynamics GP: Project Accounting Integration Scenarios - Overview for Consultant

Microsoft Great Plains or former Great Plains Software Dynamics/eEnterprise is very good platform for service business automation, including midsize and large corporations, specializing in routine projects: placement, small contracts to residential and small business customers, franchisee networks, distribution, etc. In our small article we will be giving you example of medical personnel placement projects, where hospitals and clinics are the customers. The advantage of such standard-functionality system as Great Plains/Dynamics GP is reasonable price and very reliable database platform: MS SQL Server. The other way is to deploy rich-functionality ERP, such as SAP R/3/mySAP, Oracle Financials, however the implementation, customization and integration cost would be a way higher.
• Timesheet import. Placement industry is underserved and placement application market is very weak, this results in a high demand in standard ERP customizations. Usually placement agency has CRM application with sophisticated or simple time and expenses logging functionality. This time logs should be integrated with project accounting timesheet header and line tables. Timesheet import should come in parallel with the import of new customers, new contracts and projects. Tables: PA10000 - Timesheet header and PA10001 - Timesheet line, PA01901 - PA Key Master, PA01301 - PA Budget Master, PA01101 – Contract Master and PA01201 – Project Master.
• Employee Expenses. Your temps usually file you expense reports, especially if they are traveling to remote locations/hospitals/clinics
• Billing Process. In the billing itself you usually need fixes to Project, Contract and Timesheet records – if you deploy simple custom logic and user defined fields plus notes. Prior to billing you typically run SQL scripts and stored procedures. The necessity of this custom logic should be attributed to legacy design – please note that GP was designed as database and graphical platform independent application/MRP back in the earlier 1990th. Its IDE and programming language is kind of a shell written in C – Great Plains Dexterity, current name is Microsoft Dexterity.
• Invoice Formats/Forms. Great Plains Project Accounting is former MatchData Dexterity third party module. The initial design was done in Philippines at the end of 20th century. Since then Great Plains Software tried to integrate PA into DYNAMICS.DIC (as well as its new acquisitions – Great Plains Manufacturing), later on the decision was made to keep third party (now purchased and integrated modules) in their own dictionaries. Further complication – Project Green was intended to merge all the applications into one: Microsoft Navision, Axapta, Solomon, Great Plains – currently the idea is to have web portal type of integration. As you can expect – the invoice form is very flexible and is probably too generic for the standard functionality of GP Project Accounting. You might need Dexterity custom touches to activate required features
• For C#/VB.Net developers. With the version 9.0
Microsoft Dynamics GP will be exposing you Microsoft Great Plains objects and forms. This is not a Dexterity, however you should be familiar with Dexterity design and architecture.
• Dexterity Legacy. You should still see it out there: DYNAMICS.SET, DEX.INI, DEX.EXE. In some cases we see ancient legacy applications, coming back to 1980th – Great Plains Accounting for DOS and MS Windows: 9.2, 9.5. The only recommendation to the customers who are without GP/MS support – upgrade to Microsoft Dynamics GP Standard 9.0
• Future Directions. Microsoft Dynamics GP has a long history of success. However in the US, UK, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Continental Europe Microsoft Business Solutions is now promoting new MRP/ERP application, originally developed and designed by Navision Software – Microsoft Dynamics AX/Microsoft Axapta/Navision Axapta

Do Computers Suffer From Obesity?

Remember the day when you bought your new PC with Windows installed? It was lightning fast. It took only about ten seconds to boot. When you opened the Start menu or the load/save file dialogs, they showed up
instantly. But, after a year of heavy use, you now realize that your PC has some serious performance issues. It takes more and more time to boot each time you start it. When you open your Start menu, file
dialogs or other Windows Shell powered components, also seem to always need more time. Your computer is grinding its hard disk for seemingly forever as if it was thinking whether you are worthy to see what you
had hoped to see.
Modern computers are very complex systems. They are much like the human body. By consuming large amounts of non-certified products from unknown sources, you increase the level of cholesterol in your blood very
quickly. Soon, you would have an obesity problem. You couldn’t run fast either. This is the same reason why your computer slows down over time. The truth is that there are no certified software products for
computers. All of the so-called software certificates can only guarantee the authenticity of a software product and not its quality. There are no PC medicine organizations that can certify software. Even large
software companies produce software that may harm your system integrity and leave some “cholesterol” in your computer’s veins. And, we won’t even discuss the software from unknown vendors that you download from
the Internet!
Unlike humans, computers may have many lives. All you need to do is to format your hard drive and install the system from scratch. However, this is not a good solution. By formatting your disks, you lose all your
installed programs, preferences and system integrity. Is there another solution? If you need a personal medic for your computer to provide required treatment without killing the patient first, you may want to
give SmartPC from SmartPCTools a try. It’s an all-in-one medicine package for your system. You can download it using the following link:
http://www.smartpctools.com/smartpcpro.exe
There are two versions, Personal and Professional. They differ only by the number of features available. I use the Professional version. Thus, I will guide you through its features. You will then be able to decide
for yourself whether you need the Professional or the Personal version.
Back to the “cholesterol” problem. What is considered to be bad “cholesterol” for your PC and where are the veins? The Registry is your computer’s blood system. All other organs rely on it. All the vital system
information is stored in this unified database and all Windows applications poll this information. But, there is a downside. Normally, users log into their Windows with full administrator privileges. You need
the administrator privileges in order to install new software and to configure your system and network settings.
All the applications that you run receive full administrator privileges as well. This means that
any program started by you can change almost any section of your Windows Registry, including the settings of other applications. This is how, for example, malicious scripts from the Internet change the Home and
Search pages in your Internet Explorer. With the passing of time, even normal applications from reliable vendors leave some records in your Registry that may cause an “obesity” problem. Most computer programs
never un-install completely! Users rarely complain about such issues and, as such, developers often ignore the problem. They don’t seem to be worried about such things.
No complaints - no problem. But this is a
problem. After a year of heavy use, your Registry becomes really fat. It occupies more memory, and it takes longer for every application to access the Registry. This can reduce the performance of many applications
and increase their start time. But, even worse is that some of the leftovers in your Registry point to non-existing or damaged objects. Here’s an example: When you right-click on a file in Windows Explorer, a
contextual menu pops up. It is called “contextual” because of the file type specific actions displayed in this menu.
When you install a program, it may add its handlers into system menus like the menu that pops up
for a file. You probably have some handlers there added by your image viewers (”Open with …”), archives (”Send to..”, “Compress with…”), printer drivers and more. If some of the Registry entries, like these,
point to non-existing objects, Windows will try to find them every time. There are also some Registry sections that contain programs to run on Windows startup. They are not shown in the “Startup” section of
your Start menu and you cannot remove them manually. Windows will try to start them on every boot.
Now, for the treatment. Get into a white doctor’s uniform and run SmartPC, your scalpel. The interface is very easy to understand. Click the “Fix” button and you’ll see two options available. Let’s start with
cleaning the Registry. In addition to fixing the problems described above, SmartPC will analyze and fix, or delete if necessary, broken links, device drivers, ActiveX components, fonts, un-install entries and more.
As a result, you will have a compact and a fragment-free database without obsolete and broken entries, resulting in increased overall performance of your system.
Not all problems come from the Registry. There is a special type of file, known as a “shortcut”. Your Desktop and the Start menu consist almost entirely of shortcuts. When you access your start menu or when
your Desktop is loading, Windows searches for the target objects that are referenced by your shortcuts. When a shortcut contains a broken link, or points to a non-existing object, Windows will try to find this
object, retrieve its icon, etc. The second option available in the “Fix” SmartPC section allows you to scan and fix all broken shortcuts on your disks.
Now, let’s move to the “Clean” section of SmartPC. This section allows you to clear all the junk files accumulated on your disks. Sometimes applications “forget” to delete temporary files, and sometimes they
leave temporary files due to software errors. SmartPC will empty directories of temporary files. It can also scan your disks to search for temporary files by extension. If you are anxious about security and
identity theft, you may want to clean temporary Internet files, delete cookies, IE autofill data, etc.
In the “Optimize” section, you will also find several useful tools to boost your system performance and tune-up some hidden settings. “Hidden” means that these settings are not available through the Control
Panel or standard Windows dialogs. For example, you can select whether you wish to log into your Windows account on boot without the need to enter your password, or whether you want Windows to show the login
screen with a passwords prompt. The Startup and Un-install Entries Editors also provide some advanced features that are not available in standard Windows configuration applets.
The “Boost Windows” option provides a tool that constantly monitors your memory, removes unusable blocks and de-fragments usable blocks for faster access. If enabled, it runs invisibly and optimizes your system
memory. In addition, this tool sets maximum processor use priority to the active window. When you watch a movie, you probably do not want it to make pauses when another application does something in background.
Normally, all running applications share processor time equally. But if you want to boost a multimedia application to its maximum, you need it to give it an exclusive access to your processor.
Does your computer experience the “obesity” problem? Is it full of junk files, broken shortcuts and obsolete registry values? If so, it needs a treatment!

Software for School - An Integral Part of Administration and Management

Now a days you can’t imagine how important it is to acquire Software for a School to run it smoothly. With the development of cutting edge technologies, it is very important for any organization to be up to date with the current trends. One can not afford to waste the precious time to do the paper work while deviating from the ultimate goal of its organization.
For a School, its main objective is to teach and train a student to groom in all dimensions. If a school devote most of its precious time and manpower to maintain the paper work, its a great loss to the students studying in it. The students need special attention and time of teachers to improve their teaching standards.
In order to minimize the paper work and quality time of manpower, the only solution is to implement ERP software in the school. The Software will take care of the administrative paper works, thus minimizing the time required to carry out the things manually.
The Software helps the school in more than one ways. With its implementation, the queries of the gurdian/parents can be replied in more systematic and methodical way. Parents will find it more useful to see their child’s improvement reports in a statistical way.

SAP Business One: Simplified Mid-Size ERP - Highlights for Consultant

The World of Corporate MRP systems is full of surprises. If in the late 1990th major ERP market players: Oracle, SAP were trying to realize the strategy of releasing so-called ‘light’, ‘select’, ‘express’ versions of their high-end ERP – the idea is very simple and attractive – if your corporate ERP application could be written on one CD (or several CDs) – why not to try the game when you disable 70% of the functionality and release ‘lite’ version? The real world kind of accepted and a the same time rejected this movement from the up to the down – as would it funny to realize, but the issue was – this is still the same heavy-pace ERP application and its implementation cycle is of course reduced, but not substantially and not enough to fit to mid-size and small companies. Plus – these heavy-weight applications were targeting super and mini computers, when Intel-based Servers achieved and surpassed the performance (and more important price efficiency) of these ‘high end’ computers – the necessity to support multiple OS and DB platforms ceased to exist.
• SAP Business One. SAP understood the necessity to acquire simple, and still powerful MRP/ERP system, which has simple design and as so, reduced implementation cycle. The idea of all-in-one license type is also innovative and probably helps marketing campaign. SAP Business One, when it was marketed by original software development vendor from Israel wasn’t a serious competitor to Microsoft or Oracle – until SAP purchased it and revised its marketing campaign.
• Modern Design. SAP Business One includes CRM module, it is (at least at this moment) excellently integrated with Microsoft Office. Please note that SAP Business One is not (at this time) a subject to Mendocino project – mySAP integration with Microsoft Office/Outlook.
• Production/Manufacturing. While targeted to small and mid-size clientele – SAP BO has production/ERP modules, which makes it attractive for overseas manufacturing facilities of multinational corporations.
• COM Object support. At this moment (2006) this is cool, but Microsoft Business Solutions suggest the argument against SAP Business One – if SAP doesn’t develop its own office solution or at least doesn’t invest into cooperation with Microsoft in the Office application direction – SAP Business One might lose the technology ground by 2010.
• Simplified MRP. We already publicized the idea of deploying simplified ERP for corporate business, the critical is reliable database platform (MS SQL Server is reasonably cheap nowadays and very reliable). The idea is very simple – if you are corporate business and you feel that you should be in rich-functionality ERP realm – implement simplified MRP which has the same reliability parameters, but requires some custom design to fit your business processes.

SCORM/AICC Standards Used in Web-based Learning Management System

What is a learning management system?
As a refresher from a previous article, learning management systems (LMSs) are web-based software application platforms used to plan, implement, and assess learning processes related to online and offline training administration and performance management. LMSs allow an instructor to create and deliver content, monitor learners’ participation, and assess student performance. LMSs also allow learners to use interactive features such as threaded discussions, web conferencing, discussion forums, and other methods of communication.
When learning management systems are SCORM/AICC compliant, what does that mean?
SCORM stands for Sharable Content Object Reference Model, which is a set of specifications that, when applied to course content, produces small, reusable e-Learning objects. A result of the Department of Defense’s Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) initiative, SCORM-compliant courseware elements are easily merged with other compliant elements to produce a highly modular repository of training materials.
AICC standards apply to the development, delivery, and evaluation of training courses that are delivered via technology, i.e., more often than not, through learning management systems. AICC stands for the Aviation Industry CBT [Computer-Based Training] Committee (AICC), which is an international association of technology-based training professionals that develops training guidelines for the aviation industry.
What is the Advance Distributed Learning (ADL) Initiative?
ADL is a government-sponsored organization that was started to develop specifications and promote the adoption and spread of e-Learning. They are the group responsible for developing the ADL Shareable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM). SCORM parameters combine elements of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), AICC, and Information Management Standard (IMS) specifications into a consolidated document that can be easily implemented. SCORM-compliant courseware elements are easily merged with other compliant elements to produce a highly modular repository of training materials that allows suppliers and content developers to implement e-Learning specifications in a consistent and reusable way.
In upcoming articles, we will discuss more about the SCORM/AICC standard as it is related to your learning management systems selection and other issues surrounding the SCORM/AICC standards as associated to e-Learning.
More Information on the ADL and SCORM/AICC Standards
More information on the ADL and the SCORM/AICC standards can be found at their web site http://www.adlnet.org/

Artificial Intelligent Software Cross Pollination

Many computer programmers of artificial intelligent decision matrix software end up specializing in a specific industry or endeavor. Yet as we look at such completed application software we readily see how many potential applications there are. Programmers who design such systems should have their minds wide open and be on the look out for the killer applications that exist. They should ask themselves; “Can this system be modified or used as a template for decision making for other things?”
What sorts of other applications should be looked at? Well for instance such things and industries as education, health care treatments, transportation routing, distribution channel decisions, simplifying component costs in manufacturing, replacing bureaucrats, communication transmission type routing, computer bandwidth routing, infrastructure material decision making, energy distribution channels, battlespace future force strategy, monetary flows, predicting human behavior thru intake and brain waves, predicting types of species a planet might contain, predicting language
patterns of other species, choosing of weather control levers to move, etc.
Of course to do this one has to also think in the abstract and understand the industry they are targeting for such applications; applications, which will be intrinsically valuable to those who partake in them and whose careers teeter in their ability to make the right decisions. What level of thought is needed for a quick look see into the industry often varies, yet here are some possible abstract thoughts which could help you in designing and programming the next killer application for decision matrix software;
Monetary, economic, currency and trade flows;
Transportation, distribution, routing and scheduling decisions;
Making Rain, Weather Control and Predicting Wind Patterns;
Or perhaps you need the ultimate challenge?
You see cross pollination is the key to finding the next killer application for those who study the game and design and program the worlds most important software of all; Artificial Intelligent Decision Matrix Software. Think on this.
